September Actinolite Field Trip 9/15/2010

How thoroughly enjoyable, a field trip into the cooler near by mountains around Wrightwood. It was a two hour drive to Wrightwood, with our first stop at Jensen's grocery store to purchase our NFS Adventure Passes. The weather was perfect and the nearby San Andreas fault didn't move an inch. The view from Inspiration Point was something to see. After our group photo was taken we drove back down to the storm control wash below town for our day of collecting. Within minutes all of us were finding the Actinolite we had come to collect. Everyone found material to fill their buckets and bags. The green colored stone with it's radial fan like bladed pattern of long thin crystals has a Mohs hardness of 5-6 and will hold a polish but looks handsome as an ornamental yard rock. Hopefully, we will see some of the best in our show & crow section of our next monthly meeting in October.
